Choosing a Window Replacement Company

If you are reading this you are more than likely planning on having your windows replaced by a qualified contractor in the near future. There are a lot of companies and a lot of contractors out there so who should you hire?

Most general contractors are capable of replacing windows however most are either too busy for a “small” job such as replacing the windows alone, or their schedule is booked out a year or more which is longer than most are willing to wait. That leads us to either an exterior construction company (one that does roofing, siding, windows, gutters, etc.) or a window/door and glass company.

Both of the latter two options are usually more common for when people are doing strictly window replacements. Out of those two options, there are local companies and “out of town” companies. I won’t say anything bad about the “out of town” companies but I will say before signing anything I would highly recommend checking with a local glass/window company. You will be surprised by the price difference. The out of town companies will usually spend more time with you at the initial consultation, doing a whole presentation and then trying to close the deal that day. Local companies are usually more reasonable and not as high pressure. The windows will be of the same quality and most of the times offer even better products that the out of town companies don’t have access to. Within the local company sector, the salesman/woman who listens to your needs, who is knowledgeable on the subject, asks the right questions and who instills confidence to get the job done correctly is who you want to hire. If the bid is a little bit higher than another local competitor it is probably worth it. After all, this is your home that we are talking about - which is most peoples biggest life investment.

I work for a local window/door and glass company and I have been to countless houses over the years where they had an “out of town” company over beforehand and usually are calling us as a result of having them out first. Those customers are typically the ones who didn’t want to spend the tens of thousands of dollars to have their windows replaced and so end up calling us afterwards.

There is a lot more to say on this topic but I wanted to get the word out there to homeowners who are in the window replacement market. My main point is this: you’re usually in better hands by choosing a local window company. At the very least have a local company out to your house to get a different perspective on the subject.
